Urban Primary Health Care Reform

The primary health care in the city is facing myriads of challenges; some of the challenges are simply attributed to the nature of the social, economic and demographic transitions, and the others relate to the responses of the health system. The following challenges were identified by the situational analysis conducted in the three selected sub-cities: Bole, Yeka and Gulele – in Addis Ababa.


Empowering the community – Build the competence of Health Development Army

Ethiopia has been using voluntary community health workers since around 1974. Various names and scopes of practice were
given to these volunteers: community health agents, Community Reproductive Health Agents, etc. Then, after the initiation
of the Health Extension Program, a new name and organization/structure introduced. 

Second Generation Health Extension Program Background

With the goal of making basic primary health care services accessible to the rural community, the Ethiopian government launched the health extension program (HEP) in the agrarian areas beginning in 2003. Based on lessons from the successful implementation of the agrarian health extension program, the HEP has expanded to urban and pastoral areas. 

Our Commitment to Support Addis Ababa Regional Health Bureau.

The School of Public Health (SPH) of the Addis Ababa University and Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau (AACAHB) have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on April 13, 2016. The purpose of this MoU is to clarify and establish partnership roles between the two institutions to improve the health of urban population. More specifically, the objectives of this partnership include:

The center for Urban Health Development-Ethiopia, officially launched on the 3rd February 2016 in the presence of Dr. Zufan Abera, Ethiopian Health Extension Program Directorate Director of the FMOH, is established to serve as a resource pool and knowledge hub for
Ethiopia’s urban health related agendas. The Center is believed to provide evidence for policy and programming purposes.
